He played basketball for Ames High School in the state of Iowa. He left high school as the all time leading scorer with more than 1,700 points. Harrison also helped the school obtain two state championships and go undefeated two seasons in a row. However, he did have some help along the way. Harrison Barnes played alongside fellow future Chicago Bulls star, Doug McDermott. The two of them together were pretty much unstoppable in high school.
Upon entering college Harrison Barnes had his pick of pretty much any school he wanted. He traveled to Duke, Iowa State, Kansas Okalhoma, UCLA and several others. He finally decided to attend North Carolina and play for coach Roy Williams. It didn't take long for Harrison to be effective for the team. In the first game of the year playing an exhibition game in the Bahamas, Harrison Barnes was able to put up 21 points against his opponent, the Commonwealth Bank Giants. His scoring didn't stop there, he continued his domination throughout the tournament by averaging 22 points per game and 6 rebounds. Those numbers were enough to earn him the preseason All American award.
